Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking a the events on this day in Disney history- July 9.
July 9th was a busy day in Disney history, with the release of a cult favorite movie, the closing of a Walt Disney World theme park, and the release of the latest Marvel film. So, let’s get started!
Tall Timber Released (1928)
On this day in 1928, the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short Tall Timber was released.
In the cartoon, Oswald tries to enjoy the outdoors, but he ends up getting chased by bears.
The Bears and the Bees Released (1932)
On this day in 1932, the Silly Symphony cartoon The Bears and the Bees was released.
Pluto’s Purchase Released (1948)
On this day in 1948, the Pluto cartoon Pluto’s Purchase was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey sends Pluto to the butcher to buy some sausage, but he is opposed by Butch the dog.
One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing Released (1975)
On this day in 1975, One of Our Dinosaur is Missing was released.
Based on the 1970 novel The Great Dinosaur Robbery, the film told the story of a group of British nannies who become involved in dinosaur-related espionage.
Tron Released (1982)
On this day in 1982, Tron was released.
The film told the story of a computer programmer who is transported into the software world. Starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and Cindy Morgan, the film is best remembered for its extensive use of computer graphics.
Discovery Island Closes (1999)
On this day in 1999, Discovery Island closed at Walt Disney World.
The ticked island was located in the center of Bay Lake, the island allowed guests to wander through lush gardens and see tropical birds and flora.
Sam McKim Passes Away (2004)
On this day in 2004, legendary Disney Imagineer Sam McKim passed away at age 79.
McKim joined WED Enterprises just six months before the opening of Disneyland and drew many of the original sketches of the park.
Deconstruction Begins on the Spaceship Earth Wand (2007)
On this day in 2007, deconstruction began on the 50-to wand leaning atop Epcot’s Spaceship Earth.
The wand was originally added as part of the park’s 2000 millennium celebration.
Toy Story Mania! Opens (2012)
On this day in 2012, Toy Story Mania! opened at Tokyo DisneySea.
The 3D dark ride attraction lets guests play various Toy Story-themed carnival games.
The Lion King Has Its World Premiere (2019)
On this day in 2019, The Lion King had its world premiere in Los Angeles.
A photo-realistic remake of the animated classic, among those on hand for the premiere were Beyonce, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen and director Jon Favreau.
Black Widow Released (2021)
Finally, on this day in 2021, Black Widow was released.
Marvel’s latest film was released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access.
Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, the film saw Romanoff confront her past and reshape her future.
