Welcome back to our continuing journey through The Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- July 1.
July 1st was a massive day in Disney history, with the opening of a new Walt Disney World resort, a new EPCOT pavilion, and the debut of Disney California Adventure fan-favorite. So, let’s get started!
Alice and the Dog Catcher Released (1924)
On this day in 1924, the Alice Comedy- Alice and the Dog Catcher was released.
The short featured Alice presiding over a secret club which proposes to get rid of all dog catchers and free all pooches.
Mickey’s Gala Premiere Released (1933)
On this day in 1933, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey’s Gala Premiere was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey is a guest of honor at the debut of his latest film debut, which is being held at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
Casa De Frito Reopens (1957)
On this day in 1957, Disneyland’s Casa De Fritos reopened at Disneyland.
The popular Mexican eatery moved to a new one-story adobe structure.
The Boatniks Released (1970)
On this day in 1970, The Boatniks was released.
In the film starred Robert Morse, Stefanie Powers, Phil Silvers, Norman Fell and Don Ameche.
The WEDway PeopleMover Opens (1975)
On this day in 1975, the WEDway PeopleMover opened in Walt Disney World.
The futuristic transit system takes guests on a non-stop tour of Tomorrowland.
The Apple Dumpling Gang Released (1975)
Also on this day in 1975, The Apple Dumpling Gang was released.
The film told the story of a slick gambler named Russell Donovan who is duped into taking care of a group of orphans who eventually strike gold during the California Gold Rush.
Delta Airlines Becomes Walt Disney World’s Official Airline (1987)
On this day in 1987, Delta Airlines became the official airline of Walt Disney World.
Previously, Eastern Airlines had held the distinction of being the resort’s official airline.
The Norway Pavilion Dedicated (1988)
On this day in 1988, the Norway pavilion was officially dedicated at EPCOT.
On hand for the festivities were the Crown Prince Harald of Norway and various Disney executives. The popular Maelstrom attraction would not open with the rest of the pavilion.
The Lion King Celebration Parade Debuts (1994)
On this day in 1994, The Lion King Celebration Parade debuted at Disneyland.
The parade featured floats depicting various African landscapes and the stars of The Lion King.
Innoventions Opens (1994)
On this day in 1994, Innoventions East and West opened at EPCOT.
The new pavilions featured futuristic interactive exhibits. Innoventions replaced Communicore.
Disney’s Boardwalk Inn Opens (1996)
On this day in 1996, Disney’s Boardwalk Inn opened.
Based on the Mid-Atlantic coastal cottages of the 1930s, and the Atlantic City boardwalk, the new resort was the final hotel to open on Crescent Lake.
The ABC Sound Studio Opens (1997)
On this day in 1997, the ABC Sound Studio opened at the Disney-MGM Studios.
The attraction replaced the Monster Sound Show.
Disney’s Beach Club Villas Open (2002)
On this day in 2002, Disney’s Beach Club Villas opened.
The new add-on to Disney’s Beach Club Resort was a Disney Vacation Club property.
Goofy’s New Country Dance Party Opens (2003)
On this day in 2003, Goofy’s New Country Dance Party premiered at the Magic Kingdom’s Diamond Horseshoe.
Villain’s Lair Closed (2004)
On this day in 2004, Villain’s Lair closed in Disneyland.
The shop had operated in Fantasyland since October 1998.
Jambo House Villas Opened (2007)
On this day in 2007, the Jambo House Villas opened at Walt Disney World.
The new Disney Vacation Club timeshares are located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Goofy’s Sky School Opens (2011)
On this day in 2011, Goofy’s Sky School officially opened at Disney California Adventure.
The roller coaster is themed after the 1940s cartoon Goofy’s Glider, which saw Goofy attempt to build and launch a glider.
The BFG Released (2016)
On this day in 2016, The BFG was released.
Based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, the film was directed by Steven Spielberg and told the story of an orphan human girl named Sophie who befriends a benevolent giant.
