Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- May 26.
May 26th featured the reopening of an iconic EPCOT attraction, a new land opened in the Magic Kingdom, and a new Pirates of the Caribbean film was released! So, let’s get going!
Walt Disney Copyrights Plane Crazy (1928)
On this day in 1928, Walt Disney copyrighted his Mickey Mouse cartoon Plane Crazy.
EPCOT Outreach Opens (1983)
On this day in 1983, The EPCOT Outreach information area opened in CommuniCore West.
The exhibits located here allowed guests to investigate any of EPCOT Center’s major themes, or other Disney information. The area had a staff of researchers who would attempt to answer any question.
Spaceship Earth Reopens (1986)
On this day in 1986, the second version of Spaceship Earth opened.
Sponsored by AT&T, Spaceship Earth now featured a narration by Walter Cronkite. The attraction also received a new finale which featured the song “Tomorrow’s Child.
Mickey’s Starland Opens (1990)
On this day in 1990, Mickey’s Starland opened.
Formally known as Mickey’s Birthdayland, the “temporary” land housed Mickey and Minnie’s house in addition to the Mickey’s Starland Show (formally Mickey’s Magical TV World).
Dick Nunis Retires (1999)
On this day in 1999, Dick Nunis retired as chairman of Walt Disney Attractions.
Nunis oversaw the development and construction of Walt Disney World. He retired 44 years to the day he started at the Walt Disney Company.
Cars Premiers (2006)
On this day in 2006, Disney/Pixar’s Cars had its world premiere at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.
On hand for the festivities were NASCAR legends Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip.
Avengers Assemble Premieres (2013)
On this day in 2013, Avengers Assemble premiered on Disney XD.
Based on the popular Marvel Comics superhero team, the show would run for five seasons.
The Music of Pixar Live! A Symphony of Characters Opens (2017)
On this day in 2017, The Music of Pixar Live! A Symphony of Characters began performances at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Presented three times a night, the show was staged in the park’s Theater of the Stars.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Released (2017)
Also on this day in 2017, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was released.
Starring Johnny Depp, Kevin McNally, Geoffery Rush, Javier Bardem, Benton Thwaites, and Kaya Scodelario, the film was the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
