ESPN Layoffs: Jeff Van Gundy, Jalen Rose, and Max Kellerman Among Those Out at Flagship Sports Network
Disney’s widespread company layoffs have finally hit ESPN’s on-air talent, as the company announced a slew of job cuts today.
Among those let go by the flagship sports network were Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson, Jeff Van Gundy, and Jalen Rose. The layoffs come as ESPN executives look for ways to prune costs at the network.
ESPN Responds
“Given the current environment, ESPN has determined it necessary to identify some additional cost savings in the area of public-facing commentator salaries, and that process has begun,” the company said in a statement. “This exercise will include a small group of job cuts in the short term and an ongoing focus on managing costs when we negotiate individual contract renewals in the months ahead. This is an extremely challenging process, involving individuals who have had tremendous impact on our company. These difficult decisions, based more on overall efficiency than merit, will help us meet our financial targets and ensure future growth.”
Approximately 20 people were notified today that they would no longer be appearing on ESPN programming, even if their contracts will be extant for months. ESPN intends to pay these employees the full value of their current agreements.
While ESPN’s on-air talent had largely been spared from the 7,000 layoffs throughout the Walt Disney Company, some employees have already said goodbye.
Changes At The Network
Neil Everett, the veteran “Sports Center” anchor was informed earlier this month that his contract would not be renewed. Likewise, Dough Kezerian, the sports gambling analyst was also let go.
In the face of an ever-changing media landscape, ESPN has struggled to find profitability in recent years. This, however, has not stopped Disney from spending money. Recently, ESPN signed Pat McAfee to a multi-million dollar contract. The network is also expected to re-up its contract for the NBA’s television rights.
