Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- June 28.
June 28th was a big day in Disney history with the opening of a new Walt Disney World Resort, the premiere of a huge Disney movie, and the debut of a new Mickey Mouse cartoon series! So, let’s get going!
The Plowboy Released (1929)
On this day in 1929, the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Plowboy was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey flirts with Minnie while farming, but she rebuffs him. The cartoon was also the debut of Horace Horsecollar.
Bone Trouble Released (1940)
On this day in 1940, the Pluto cartoon Bone Trouble was released.
In the cartoon, Pluto tries to steal a bone from Butch the bulldog, who lives next door.
Donald’s Double Trouble Released (1946)
On this day in 1946, the Donald Duck short Donald’s Double Trouble was released.
In the cartoon, Donald hires a look-alike who is more gentlemanly, in order to win back Daisy.
First Date Nite at Disneyland Held (1957)
On this day in 1957, the first ever Date Nite at Disneyland was held.
For the first time, Disneyland’s operation were extended until 1 a.m., in order to attraction young dating couples.
Walt Disney World Announces Plans For Airstrip (1971)
On this day in 1971, Walt Disney World announced their plans to build an airstrip.
The Lake Buena Vista STOLport would eventually be constructed and operate for a year.
Big Bands at Disneyland Premieres (1984)
On this day in 1984, The Disney Channel debuted a new series Big Bands at Disneyland.
Hosted by Peter Marshall, the series featured performances and interviews from Disneyland.
Snow White Receives A Star On The Walk of Fame (1987)
On this day in 1987. Snow White received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
On hand for the festivities were animators Ward Kimball, Marc Davis, and Art Babbit, as well as Adriana Caselotti, the original voice of Snow White.
Disney’s Grand Floridian Beach Resort Opens (1988)
On this day in 1988, Disney’s Grand Floridian Beach Resort opened.
The new crown jewel of Walt Disney World, the Grand Floridian was themed after the turn-of-century Victorian Florida.
The Main Street Athletic Company Opens (1995)
On this day in 1995, The Main Street Athletic Company opened in the Magic Kingdom.
Located on Main Street USA, the store sold Disney apparel.
Dick Nunis Gets A Main Street Window
On this day in 1999, Dick Nunis received a window on Disneyland’s Main Street USA.
Nunis was the former chairman of Walt Disney Attractions and President of Disneyland.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Premieres (2003)
On this day in 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl premiered in Disneyland.
Base on the popular Disney attraction, the film starred Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush.
Disney Announces Pleasure Island Changes (2008)
On this day in 2008, Walt Disney World announced that it was shutting down six nightclubs at Pleasure Island.
In an attempt to make Downtown Disney more family friendly, clubs such as the BET SoundStage Club, Mannequins Dance Palace, and 8Trax would eventually close.
Mickey Mouse Cartoon Series Debuts (2013)
On this day in 2013, the Disney Channel officially debuted the new Mickey Mouse cartoon series.
The series was comprised of shorts featuring Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Daisy and Pete.
Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Ends (2015)
On this day in 2015, the final episode of the animated series Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. aired.
DisneyToon Studios Shut Down (2018)
On this day in 2018, DisneyToon Studios was shut down.
The division of Walt Disney Animation Studios had produced 47 films, primarily direct-to-video. These included DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp and Planes: Fire and Rescue.
Avengers: Endgame Re-Released (2019)
On this day in 2019, Avengers: Endgame was re-released in theaters.
The new cut featured an additional seven minutes of new footage, including a Stan Lee tribute and a sneak peek of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
