Welcome back to our continuing journey through the magical history of the Walt Disney Company! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- February 17.
February 17th was a big day in Disney history with a huge acquisition, the release of new films, and the end of a Disneyland attraction. So, let’s get started!
Camping Out Released (1934)
On this day in 1934, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Camping Out was released.
In the short, Mickey, Minnie, Horace and Clarabelle are harassed by a mosquito while camping!
Satellite View of America Closes (1960)
On this day in 1960, Satellite View of America closed in Disneyland.
Originally known as Space Station X-1, the attraction opened with the park in 1955.
Rock ‘n Roller Coaster Construction Begins
On this day in 1998, construction began on Rock ‘n Roller Coaster at the Disney-MGM Studios.
The attraction would eventually open as Rock ‘n Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith on July 29, 1999 .
Belle’s Magical World Released (1998)
Also on this day in 1998, Belle’s Magical World was released.
A sequel to the Disney animated classic, Belle’s Magical World was made up of four vignettes that taught the morals of forgiveness, love and kindness.
Disney Purchases the Muppets (2004)
On this day in 2004, Disney announced that it had purchased the Muppets and Bear in the Big Blue House from Jim Henson Studios.
Disney initially began talks with Jim Henson to acquire the characters in 1989. Following Henson’s unexpected death, the merger fell through. Disney finally got the Muppets in 2004, but did not acquire the Henson’ created Sesame Street characters.
Eight Below Released (2006)
On this day in 2006, Disney released Eight Below.
The film was a fictional portrayal of a 1958 Japanese scientific expedition to Antarctica.
Eight Below starred Paul Walker, Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood and Jason Biggs.
The Secret World of Arrietty Released (2012)
On this day in 2012, The Secret World of Arrietty was released.
The animated film was based on The Borrowers by Mary Norton. In the film, Arrietty, a young borrower, befriends Sho a human boy with a heart condition.
Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline Debuts (2012)
Also on this day in 2012, Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline debuted at Disney’s California Adventure.
The new show featured Minnie Mouse and friends performing a series of show tunes.
Radio Rebel Released (2012)
Also on this day in 2012, The Disney Channel Original Movie Radio Rebel premiered.
The film starred Debby Ryan and was based on the novel Shrinking Violet.
Luigi’s Flying Tires Closes (2015)
On this day in 2015, Luigi’s Flying Tires closed at Disney’s California Adventure.
The attraction originally opened in June 2012. Luigi’s Flying Tires featured floating bumper cars shaped like tires. The attraction was replaced by Luigi’s Rollicking’ Roadsters.
Rivers of Light Premiers (2017)
On this day in 2017, Disney’s Animal Kingdom premiered Rivers of Light.
The nighttime spectacular used live performers, music, lasers and special effects to tell an a story that celebrated the natural world.
