“Elemental” Struggles At the Box Office But Resonates With Audiences
While Pixar was hoping that “Elemental” would put the studio back on track after “Lightyear” bombed at the box office last year, the early results are not great.
The film grossed $11.8 million on Friday, which would put it on track to gross somewhere between $28 million and $32 million over its opening weekend.
That number would put “Elemental” in the bottom echelon of Pixar films, alongside previous disappointments “The Good Dinosaur” and “Lightyear”.
Introducing “Elemental”
Directed by Peter Sohn, “Elemental” is set in Element City, a place where fire, water, land, and air residents live together.
The film follows the story of Ember, a fiery young woman who falls in love with a sappy water element named Wade. The relationship that develops between the two challenges both Ember, and her family’s, belief that “elements don’t mix.
While “Elemental” may be off to a slow start at the box office, it is not all bad news for Pixar.
An “A” From Audiences
So far, “Elemental” is wowing the audience that it does bring in. As such, the film has a CinemaScore of an “A”.
The positive reaction from audiences is surely a sigh of relief for both Pixar and Disney, who are hoping that strong word of mouth gives “Elemental” an extended run at the box office.
The film’s warm reception is contrasted by fellow new arrival “The Flash”, which has been poorly rated by audiences.
In the end, if “Elemental” can gain traction with audiences, Pixar could still have a sleeper hit on their hands.
