‘Andor’s Cast Hated Filming The Prison Scenes
Some of the best scenes in Season 1 of Andor were set in the prison facility on Narkina V.
For those who don’t remember, Andor is sent to the ocean planet prison after being arrested by the Empire. There, Cassian and his fellow inmates are forced to create intricate machinery for the Empire. The stark white clothes that the prisoners were forced to wear, combined with the sparse, sterile facility, made the prison scenes some of the most aesthetically memorable in Star Wars history.

As it turns out, however, spending time in a space prison is no fun, even if you are just an actor.
“You Feel Like You’ve Lost Your Identity”
In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Andy Serkis, who played Andor’s supervisor Kino Loy, revealed that while filming the scenes, the actors felt “imprisoned themselves.”

“The desensitization of wearing a paper suit and walking in bare feet was the most strange thing about the process. Week in, week out, everybody looking like a carbon copy of yourself, you feel like you’ve lost your identity. And everything about that set was hostile in its clinicalness. It did strange things to your head, like it was designed to do,” he recalled.
While the prison scenes were some of the most memorable in the show, they came at the end of a grueling 10-month shoot for the actors. The weariness visible on Serkis and Diego Luna’s faces was quite real.

“Every day, going into those white walls, dressed in that uniform, made you feel like just another number. The prison metaphorically became a different thing for each actor—everyone found a way to hate the prison,” Luna remembered.
One Fatal Flaw?
While Andor and the prison scenes in particular were lauded by fans, Andor’s production designer Luke Hull did have one regret about the shoot.

“The Star Wars toilet still keeps me up at night,” Hull sighs. “We probably could have done a bit more work to make it more interesting.”
If Season 2 of Andor can live up to the high bar set by Season 1, I think I speak for all Star Wars fans when I say that we will forget about the plain toilets.
