This Day in Disney History- May 30
Welcome back to our continuing trip through The Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- May 30.
May 30th featured a slew of Disney cartoon releases, the dedication of a new land in Disneyland, and the release of a Pixar classic. So, let’s get started!
Thru The Mirror Released (1936)
On this day in 1936, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Thru The Mirror was released.
Based on the Alice novel “Through the Looking Glass”, the short features Mickey transported to a land where inanimate objects come to life.
Canine Caddy Released (1941)
On this day in 1941, the Pluto cartoon Canine Caddy was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey and Pluto are at the golf course, where Pluto gets into a fight with a mangy gopher.
Figaro and Frankie Released (1947)
On this day in 1947, the Disney cartoon Figaro and Frankie was released.
In the cartoon, Minnie Mouse tries to prevent her cat Figaro from eating a yellow canary named Frankie.
Don’s Fountain of Youth Released (1953)
On this day in 1953, the Donald Duck cartoon Don’s Fountain of Youth was released.
In the cartoon, when Donald and his nephews find what they think is the Fountain of Youth, Donald tricks Huey, Dewey, and Louie into believing it works.
It’s A Small World Celebration Held (1966)
On this day in 1966, Disneyland threw a grand opening celebration for it’s a small world.
Although the attraction actually opened on May 28, Disney celebrated it’s a small world’s arrival from the New York World Fair with a marching band, pomp, and circumstance.
Site Preparations Begin For Walt Disney World
On this day in 1967, site preparations began in Florida for what would eventually become Walt Disney World.
1,584 days and $400 million later, the Vacation Kingdom would open to guests.
Finding Nemo Released (2003)
On this day in 2003, Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo was generally released.
The film told the story of an overprotective clownfish named Marlin who, along with his friend Dory, searches for his missing son Nemo. The film would win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Scotty McCreery Visits Disney’s Hollywood Studios (2011)
On this day in 2011, Scotty McCreery was honored with a parade at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The recent American Idol winner met fans in front of The American Idol Experience and performed a short concert.
Maleficent Opens (2014)
On this day in 2014, Disney’s Maleficent opened in theaters.
Starring Angelina Jolie, the film was a re-telling of Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty, told from the perspective of the main antagonist, Maleficent.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Dedicated (2019)
On this day in 2019, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was officially dedicated in Disneyland.
On hand for the festivities were Disney CEO Bob Iger, Star Wars creator George Lucas, and stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams.
