Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Film Will Reportedly Be Titled “Heir to the Empire”
The return of Grand Admiral Thrawn as the next big Star Wars villain is perhaps one of the worst-kept Star Wars secrets ever.
After making his debut in the animated Star Wars Rebels, Thrawn will be making the jump to live-action for Ahsoka. Hints throughout The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, and the Ahsoka promotional material all point to the blue-skinned Grand Admiral’s return.
Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Film
While Thrawn will be appearing in Ahsoka, the height of the Grand Admiral’s power will come in Dave Filoni’s upcoming feature film.
That film is expected to bring together characters from Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian, and perhaps even Skeleton Crew. Filoni has previously confirmed Thrawn as the film’s main antagonist.
Adapting Zahn’s Trilogy?
The “culmination event movie” will likely take inspiration from Timothy Zahn’s “Thrawn trilogy.”
Considered by many to be the original Star Wars “sequel trilogy,” the books saw the introduction of military genius Grand Admiral Thrawn who attempts to bring down the New Republic and restore the Galactic Empire to power.
While now no longer to be considered part of the Star Wars canon, the books have proved to be influential, especially in Filoni’s work on Star Wars Rebels.
From Legends to Canon
Cementing the connection between the original Thrawn trilogy and Filoni’s work is the new report that The Mandalorian producer’s Star Wars film will be titled “Heir to the Empire,” which was also the title of the first book in Zahn’s trilogy.
Star Wars fans who have long clamored for a film adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy are finally getting their wish.
Now, if we could only somehow work Mara Jade and Talon Karrde into the canon, Star Wars Legends fans will finally be at peace.
