Dave Filoni Confirms Thrawn Is Coming to The Official Star Wars Universe
One of the worst-kept secrets in Star Wars is that Grand Admiral Thrawn is coming as the “Heir to the Empire.”
While the character made his canonical debut in Star Wars Rebels and Lars Mikkelsen is set to reprise the role in live-action for Ahsoka, it seems as if we are finally going to get an adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s “Heir to the Empire” trilogy.
Who Is Thrawn?
For those who don’t know, Thrawn originally appeared in the Expanded Universe novels. His arc served as the original “sequel trilogy.” In those books, Thrawn was introduced as the next big threat to the galaxy.
While the Star Wars Expanded Universe has since been deemed non-canonical by Disney, it seems as if Thrawn is about take center stage in the main Star Wars timeline.
Heir to the Empire
With Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni set to bring together the characters of The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, it is likely only a matter of time until we see Thrawn on the big screen.
In a recent interview with Empire, Filoni discussed the possibility that the Grand Admiral is being set up as the franchise’s next main villain.
“Definitely, in my eyes,” he responded. “When Timothy Zahn wrote ‘Heir To The Empire,’ Thrawn became this very iconic villain. He was different than anything we’d seen before. He wasn’t another helmet-wearing, lightsaber-wielding bad guy, you know? There’s a lot of pull to make characters that are like Vader because it is so iconic.”
Building on Zahn’s Work
Filoni has previously spoken about collaborating with Zahn about the future of Thrawn. With the groundwork being laid for the Grand Admiral’s rise to power in both Rebels and The Bad Batch, it seems as if it is only a matter of time until the villain claims his title as heir to The Empire.
“I want to make sure that I’m honoring ideas that Tim had, so I want to see what’s [in his books] for the story. In The Bad Batch, there is actually some crossover with the book Heir To The Empire. In the military base of Tantiss. So there are little things along the way that I’ve built across different mediums. All in preparation for things that come later.”
Star Wars fans will have to wait until August when Ahsoka lands on Disney+ to see Thrawn again.
