May 8th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still had the release of a Silly Symphony cartoon, rumors of a new Disneyland park, and the debut of a live-action Disney movie. So, let’s get going!
Frolicking Fish Released (1930)
On this day in 1930, the Silly Symphony Frolicking Fish was released.
The short featured the adventures of frolicking marine life having a party at the bottom of the ocean — until a hungry octopus arrives.
Newspapers Report WestCOT
On this day in 1991, newspapers began to report that Disney would spend $3.1 billion on WestCOT in Anaheim.
The plans called for new hotels, a retail space, and a theme park inspired by EPCOT Center.
Trail of the Panda Released (2009)
On this day in 2009, Trail of the Panda was released.
The second collaboration between Disney and Chinese filmmakers, the film told the story of a mute orphan boy who rescues a lost panda cub.
Walt Disney World Grad Nite Ends (2011)
On this day in 2011, Walt Disney World’s final Grad Nite ended.
The yearly event began in 1972 but was retired after the 2012 event.
Disney’s Aladdin Premieres (2019)
On this day in 2019, Disney’s Aladdin had its world premiere in Paris, France.
The film was a live-action remake of the 1992 animated film. It starred Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott.
