Fantasmic! To Remain Closed at Disneyland For Foreseeable Future
If you were following along with us here at MickeyBlog you may have seen our coverage at the end of last month that a fire occurred during the dragon scene at Fantasmic! at Disneyland on April 22, 2023. According to previously shared footage, the Maleficent Dragon which is special effects prop used in that production had a malfunction and erupted into flames which quickly spread to other parts of Tom Sawyer Island, and the production was promptly halted. With substantial damage to one of the production’s most significant set pieces, we knew that closure might be in the cards and now Disneyland has said the production will remain dark until at least the end of May.
Performances of “Fantasmic!” at Disneyland Park remain paused until at least May 28.

This is indeed reflected on the Disneyland.com website which features has the following message:
On the website, Disneyland does not give an official reopening date for the production. Theme park hours at Disneyland Resort are currently posted through mid-June. Fantasmic! does not appear on the schedule during the hours currently posted. As you can see from the image above no performances are scheduled through June 16, 2023.

On April 22, about half an hour into the performance of Fantasmic! the dragon burst into flames and quickly became engulfed. In a recent piece that appeared in the New York Times, Sgt Jon McClintock from the Anaheim Police Department said that law enforcement was investigating the cause of the incident. Thankfully no cast members were injured during ht time of the incent but six cast members were treated for smoke inhalation.

For those unfamiliar, Fantasmic! follows Mickey Mouse as his dreams come alive and is known for its stunning visual effects, pyrotechnics, water projections, and stage performers. The Maleficent Dragon (Murphy) is a 35-foot dragon that breathes fire during a key moment in the show where Mickey’s dreams turn to nightmares.
This is a story that we will continue to follow closely. We will let you know as soon as further information is given regarding an extended closure or possible reopening date.
