Aftermath of Fantasmic! Fire Revealed in New Photos
If you were following along with us here at MickeyBlog over the weekend you may have heard the news that production of Fantasmic! was promptly halted at Disneyland on Saturday night after the fire-breathing dragon themed after Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty erupted into flames. New images have surfaced online showing the devastating aftermath of the fire and what’s left of the dragon lovingly referred to as Murphy by Disney fans.

As you can see from the image above shared by Twitter user @jaysquivel all that remains of the dragon are parts of the steel skeleton.
On Saturday night, about 30 minutes into the show, the dragon used in Fantasmic! became quickly engulfed in flames. According to a recent piece in the New York Times, who spoke to Anaheim Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jon McClintock, officials are still investigating the cause of the incident.
The spokesperson also revealed that six cast members were treated for smoke inhalation at the time of the blaze but did not require any further medical attention.
We shared the news yesterday that performances of Fantasmic! have been canceled through Thursday according to the Disneyland app. We wouldn’t be surprised if Fantasmic! remains dark for a longer period of time. We’ll keep you posted.
So we were on Splash Mountain at #Disneyland when Maleficant caught fire, and it was definitely a night to remember. @dlnt @ThemeParkLore @ScottGustin @MiceChat @OOCParks pic.twitter.com/PLG9CdX4jH

Above is another video shared by @LeviathanPop which shows the shocking view of the fire from Splash Mountain which is near Fantasmic! at Disneyland. Huge plumes of black smoke can be seen coming from the Fantasmic! stage.
For those unfamiliar, Fantasmic! follows Mickey Mouse as his dreams come alive and is known for its stunning visual effects, pyrotechnics, water projections, and stage performers. The Maleficent Dragon (Murphy) is a 35-foot dragon that breathes fire during a key moment in the show where Mickey’s dreams turn to nightmares.
Though the area around the Fantasmic! viewing area was evacuated during Saturday’s fire, the park did remain open. According to the New York Times since the incident, Disneyland has released the following statement, “We are temporarily suspending fire effects similar to those used at Disneyland park’s ‘Fantasmic!’ at select shows and entertainment experiences globally out of an abundance of caution following the ‘Fantasmic!’ prop fire.”
We aren’t clear as of yet as to what impact this might have on other Disney nighttime spectaculars. This is a story that we will continue to follow closely and we’ll keep you posted!
