Welcome back to our continuing trip through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- April 22.
April 22nd was a massive day in Disney history, with the closure of a Magic Kingdom Land, the opening of a brand-new theme park, and the debut of Marvel’s biggest film.
The World’s Fair Kicks Off in Flushing, New York
On this day in 1964, The World’s Fair in Flushing, New York officially kicked off.
Four Disney attraction’s debuted at the fair, including Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln, The Carousel of Progress, the Ford Magic Skyway, and it’s a small world.
Mickey’s Birthdayland Closes (1990)
On this day in 1990, Mickey’s Birthdayland closed.
Originally designed for Mickey’s 70th birthday, Mickey’s Birthdayland would eventually reopen as Mickey’s Starland before becoming Mickey’s Toontown Fair.
A Giant Oak Tree Comes To Dixie Landings (1991)
On this day in 1991, a 55-foot-tall oak tree weighing nearly 85 tons was moved to the future location of Disney’s Dixie Landings Resort.
The oak tree would serve as the centerpiece for the Ol’ Man Island recreation area at the resort.
The Empress Lilly Closes (1995)
On this day in 1995, The Empress Lily closed at Pleasure Island.
An authentic re-creation of an 1900s paddle wheel boat, the dining location would eventually reopen as Fulton’s Crab House in 1996.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opens (1998)
On this day in 1998, Disney’s Animal Kingdom officially opened.
On it’s opening day, the park featured five lands- The Oasis, Safari Village, Camp MInnie-MIckey, Dinoland USA, and Africa.
Headline attractions opening this day included It’s Tough to be a Bug, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Countdown to Extinction, Festival of the Lion King, and the Discovery River Boats.
Sounds Dangerous Opens (1999)
On this day in 1999, Sounds Dangerous with Drew Carey opened at the Disney-MGM Studios.
The “audio adventure” attraction starred comedian Drew Carey.
Rip Girls Premieres (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Disney Channel original movie Rip Girls debuted.
The film told the story of a teen-age girl who goes to Hawaii with her father.
Disneynature Earth Released (2009)
On this day in 2009, Disneynature’s Earth was released in theaters.
The film was narrated by James Earl Jones and told the story of three animal families- polar bears, elephants, and whales.
Disneynature Oceans Released (2010)
On this day in 2010, Disneynature released Oceans.
Narrated by Pierce Brosnan, the film highlighted some 80 underwater species.
Disneynature African Cats Released (2011)
On this day in 2011, Disneynature released the film African Cats.
Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the film told the story of a young lion cub and his mother who lead a pride.
Avengers: Endgame Premiers (2019)
On this day in 2019, Avengers: Endgame premiered in Los Angeles.
The fourth Avengers film, Avengers: Endgame would eventually be the second highest grossing film of all time.
