What I’ll Never Forget about Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary
Today marks the final date for Walt Disney World’s extended birthday celebration.
The most popular theme park in the world opened on October 1st, 1971.

Cinderella Castle
Modern Disney executives are so proud of the feat that the birthday party has lasted for 18 months.
Nobody thinks about this fact, but Walt Disney World is already 51 and a half now!

Magic Kingdom
Park officials aren’t slowing down, either. Over the past few weeks, Walt Disney World has already switched to the Disney100 event for the rest of 2023.
Still, I’ll always look back fondly on Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. Here are my takeaways.
Disney Survived the Impossible
I know we’re all trying to pretend like the pandemic never happened.
Still, whenever Disney historians look back on Walt Disney World’s 50th birthday, it’s an essential part of the conversation.

Past Mask Mandate
Disney stubbornly refused to cancel its birthday party despite everything going on in the world.
In fact, executives believed that the 50th anniversary celebration mattered more because of everything else happening.

So, Disney willingly chose to throw a birthday party unlike any other at a time when park guests still wore face coverings and honored social distancing practices.
This single act of defiance showed that Disney believed it would survive the worst and come back stronger than ever.

Crowds in Magic Kingdom
I don’t want to rehash details all of us hate, but the gist is that Walt Disney World had only operated for 13 months in its weird half-life status.
As the 50th anniversary reached 2022, it ended its face mask requirements, first indoors and later everywhere.

At this point, guests could enjoy the parks the way they were intended after more than two years of aggravation.
As we reach the conclusion of the half-century celebration, few people even remember what Disney has overcome. But I do.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
I greatly admire the pride that cast members have shown in keeping the magic alive and throwing an unforgettable party in the face of Disney’s greatest challenge.
The EARidescent Look
I’m not really a color spectrum person per se. I’m as color-blind as they come, so much so that loved ones make a game of my guessing at colors.
Still, even I gasped in admiration the first time I saw Disney’s 50th-anniversary color scheme.

The so-called EARidescent colors fall right into my wheelhouse because they change! As MickeyBlog’s Melissa Roden has pointed out, the “dazzling hues that shift and change depending on your vantage point.”
In other words, when you stand in a certain light, you’ll notice a different shade than if you’re in a dimly lit room. It’s a brilliant color that is never quite the same.

What could be more Disney than EARidescent colors? Obviously, management agrees, as they decked out Mickey and Minnie Mouse in their EARidescent best.

The 50th Anniversary Statues
I’ll never forget a funny moment that occurred during my wife and my first Walt Disney World trip during the 50th-anniversary event.
We were walking through Magic Kingdom when one of us started talking. I thought it was her, and she thought it was me.

In reality, the answer was what was behind door number three. Our MagicBands had triggered the automated response system on a gold statue.
Disney decorated its themed lands with these gorgeous pieces of art.

Everyone from Donald Duck to the Mad Hatter to Abu to Edna Mode to the Orange Bird had a statuette.
Thanks to a clever Imagineering trick, MagicBands signaled the statues that a person was within range.

At this point, the statue sprung into action and performed an audio acknowledgment. Here’s a video of where you could find them:
Disney even updated them with holiday interactions:

Weirdly, I didn’t always love the talking gold statues, at least not at first. It’d sometimes confuse me and interrupt a conversation.
However, as a diehard Disney fan, I’d inevitably crack up once I realized what was happening.
This is good tech, and I hope Disney expands it over time.
The New Rides, Restaurants, and Shows
On October 1st, 2021, Disney’s Contemporary Resort opened a new restaurant that quickly became one of my favorites at Walt Disney World.
However, this place was also just the second-best new eatery to open within two weeks.

Park officials opened Space 220 roughly ten days before the anniversary celebration as a way to ensure it worked correctly. There’s a LOT of tech involved.
Both dining experiences are among the best at Walt Disney World. Guests during the 50th birthday party adored discovering each one.

Similarly, Disney opened two rides during the 50th-anniversary party. Fans are still debating which they like better, but it’s a splitting of hairs.
Nobody would argue against Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a storytelling masterpiece that happens to be a roller coaster.

Similarly, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure has charmed everyone with its gentle, engaging ride experience.
You shrink down to Remy’s size and experience what restaurant kitchen life is like for him. It’s a thrilling, surprisingly madcap adventure.

By the way, Disney wasn’t entirely successful with its new offerings for the 50th birthday party.
Disney’s KiteTails utterly failed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This show lasted exactly one year (to the day) and had already stopped running most of its performances by then.

Simba Kite during KiteTails
During the first few days, a kite got stuck in a tree, and it never really recovered.
Similarly, fans waited several extra years for Harmonious at EPCOT. That must have made them hyper-critical.

By the time the show opened, expectations had grown too high, like with a new Marvel or Star Wars movie.
While Harmonious provides plenty of charm, park officials have accepted that park guests don’t love it enough to justify the overhead. Its final show is Sunday.
The Beacons of Magic and the Castle
I’ll tell you what I’ll miss the most about the 50th-anniversary celebration. It’s a little thing, but it really matters to me.
Imagineers stuck a giant 50 logo on the front of Cinderella Castle, and it has transfixed me for 18 months now. It’s just gorgeous.

Cinderella Castle
I’m one of those people who remember the hideous 25th-anniversary birthday cake castle.
I know that some of you look back on it fondly as kitschy and charming. I was squarely in the “let us never speak of it again” camp.

Disney tweaked people like me by adding AR Lens pictures as PhotoPass options.
No matter where you stand on the birthday candle castle, I’m confident you agree that Cinderella Castle has never looked better than right now.

The EARidescent décor seemed perfect for the majestic castle. It was like the castle got a suit, too. And I adored it.
Similarly, Disney went all out with its most memorable landmarks. Each night, the castle and other park icons glowed with a limited-time look.

Spaceship Earth
As an EPCOT superfan, I preferred the Beacon of Magic at Spaceship Earth:
Still, the one that has caused me to gasp the most is the Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom:
Let’s not overlook what Hollywood Studios added for its Beacon of Magic, either:
For most Disney fans, there’s no topping Cinderella Castle, though:
This special brand of nightly wonder exemplifies what we’ve come to expect from Walt Disney World over the past 50 (well, 51 and a half) years.

50th anniversary sign
I know that we all hate that it’s over, but just think! We’re only 23 and a half years away from the 75th birthday party!
Plus, we’ve got the Disney100 event to keep us occupied this year! It’s a great time to be a Disney fan.
