Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson Exit Star Wars Project
The million dollar question surrounding the Star Wars franchise at this time, is who will create the next feature film set in a galaxy far, far away.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Patty Jenkins’ “Rouge Squadron” had been shelved by Lucasfilm. Likewise, Kevin Feige and screenwriter Michael Waldron have reportedly put jumping into the Star Wars fray on the backburner.
With the next scheduled Star Wars film set to hit theaters in December 2025, time is ticking for Disney and Lucasfilm.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Enters Star Wars
One potential candidate to fill that 2025 slot has been an untitled Star Wars projected helmed by award winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Obaid-Chinoy, who has a commitment from Lucasfilm to produce a Star Wars feature film, has recently moved into fiction, and directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel.
While many fans are excited to see what Obaid-Chinoy’s vision of Star Wars will look like, production on her film has hit a speedbump.
Screenwriters Exit Just Days After Turning In Script
According to Above the Line, screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson are no longer attached to the project.
The duo turned a script in for the film, before exiting the project a few days later.
In a recent interview with Slashfilm, Lindelof seemed to indicate that his involvement with Star Wars was not going as well as many had hoped.
“The degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high” when it comes to creating a film for Star Wars. If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist… I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem. You start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”
More News to Come
While production of Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars film was not expected to start until 2024, this is clearly a setback for the film.
More details about the film will likely be announced at next month’s Star Wars Celebration. For now however, Obaid-Chonoy is expected to stay on the project.
