John Boyega Makes Peace With Star Wars
John Boyega has finally made peace with his role as Finn in Disney’s Star Wars.
Originally debuted in JJ Abrams’s The Force Awakens, Finn was a former stormtrooper turned resistance fighter.
While the hero appeared in all three of the sequel films, Finn did not turn out to be the key character that many fans, and and Boyega himself had hoped he would become.
Boyega Blasts Disney
In 2020, Finn publicly lambasted Disney for their treatment of the character.
“What I would say to Disney is, ‘Do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important to the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good”
Three years after the infamous interview, Boyega has a more nuanced view of his time in a galaxy far, far, away.
“For me Star Wars has made the man, in a sense… The experiences, the fun times, good times, ugly times, bad times, it makes you who you are as you navigate through the industry, and that has definitely been interesting.”
A Star Wars Fan
As a fan of the franchisee, Boyega has also enjoyed the new Lucasfilms releases, and being able to experience Star Wars again without being directly involved.
“I feel like the arc that JJ tried to tie up, that’s where I feel comfortable with the release of him. And since then I’ve been able to enjoy, as a fan, The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi. I’m enjoying the balance of all things.”
While the Star Wars fan-base is particularly difficult, it is great to see key actors such as Boyega, Hayden Christensen and Daisy Ridley embracing their place in Star Wars history, and finally receiving the recognition they deserve.
