Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- March 13.
March 13th featured the release of classic Disney film, the naming of a new CEO, and the closure of a Disneyland Paris attraction. So, let’s get going!
Walt Disney Tells Roy About Mickey (1928)
On this day in 1928, Walt Disney sent his brother Roy a telegram from New York.
The telegram read, “leaving tonite stopping over KC arrive home Sunday morning seven thirty. Don’t worry everything ok will give details when arrive”.
The telegram was a reference to the fact that Disney had lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Chales Mintz, but Walt had an idea for an animated mouse character.
Woodland Cafe Released (1937)
On this day in 1937, the Silly Symphony Woodland Cafe was released.
The Silly Symphony cartoon is set in a nightclub frequented by bugs.
The Love Bug Released (1969)
On this day in 1969, The Love Bug was released.
Starring Dean Jones, Michele Lee, Buddy Hackett and Joe Flynn, the film told the story of a race car driver who becomes a champion driving a Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own. The film marked the debut of the popular Herbie the Love Bug!
Horizon’s Ride Vehicles Removed (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Omnimover vehicles were removed from Horizons.
The attraction had been closed since 1999, and the building was being prepared for demolition.
Bob Iger Chosen As CEO
On this day in 2005, the Disney board of directors choose Bob Iger as the next CEO of Disney.
Iger will not assume his post until Michael Eisner steps down on September 30.
Race to Witch Mountain Released (2009)
On this day in 2009, Race to Witch Mountain was released.
A re-telling of the 1975 Disney film Escape to Witch Mountain, the film starred Dwayne Johnson, Anna Sophia Robb, and Carla Gugino.
Cinderella Released (2015)
On this day in 2015, Disney’s live-action Cinderella was release.
Starring Cate Blanchett, Lily James, and Kenneth Branagh, the film borrowed many elements form the 1950 Disney animated classic.
Star Girl Debuts (2020)
On this day in 2020 Star Girl debuted on Disney +.
The film followed the high school misfit who falls in love with a non-conformist girl.
Lights, Motors, Action: Extreme Stunt Show Closes (2020)
Finally, on this in 2020. Lights, Motors, Action!: Extreme Stunt Show closed in the Walt Disney Studios Park.
The show had run at Disneyland Paris since 2002.
