This Day in Disney History- March 1
Welcome back to our trip through Disney’s past, and welcome to March! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- March 1.
March 1st featured the exit of a Disney Legend, an expansion for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and the christening of a new Disney ship! So, let’s get started!
Ub Iwerks Leaves Disney (1930)
On this day in 1930, Ub Iwerks left Walt Disney Studios for the first time.
Iwerks set out to create cartoons based on his character Flip the Frog. When that character failed to gain popularity, Iwerks returned.
Shipwreck Released (1991)
On this day in 1991, Disney released Shipwrecked.
Produced by a group of Scandinavian companies, the film told the story of a young Norwegian boy who becomes a cabin boy on a ship in the 1850s.
Disney’s Hilton Head Resort Opens (1996)
On this day in 1996, Disney opened their Hilton Head Resort in South Carolina.
The Disney Vacation club resort is themed after 1940s hunting and fishing lodge.
The “Ward Kimball” Locomotive Dedicated (1997)
On this day in 1997, the #5 locomotive, the “Ward Kimball” was dedicated at the Magic Kingdom.
Unfortunately, the locomotive was deemed to small for operation on the Walt Disney World Railroad.
Asia Opens in Disney’s Animal Kingdom (1999)
On this day in 1999, Kali River Rapids and Maharjah Jungle Trek opened in the Asia section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
On Kali River Rapids, guests go on a whitewater rafting trip through Asia’s jungles. Maharajah Jungle Trek on the other hand, allows guests to see exotic animals including Asian tigers, deer, and fruit bats.
Tapestry of Dreams Ends (2003)
On this day in 2003, Tapestry of Dreams were performed for the final time.
The last performance also marked the end of the 100 Years of Magic celebration.
The Disney Fantasy Christened (2012)
On this day in 2012, the Disney Fantasy was christened as the fourth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet.
On hand for the festivities were Jerry Seinfeld, Neil Patrick Harris, Nick Cannon and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure’s Final Season Airs (2020)
Finally, on this day in 2020, the final season of Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure premiered.
A sequel to the popular film Tangled, the show ran for three seasons.
