Disney Is The First Studio To Pass $1 Billion At The Box Office In 2023
We are only six weeks into the new year, and Disney has already reached a major milestone.
With Avatar: The Way of Water dominating the box office in January, before handing the reins to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Disney has now surpasses $1 billion at the global box office with ticket sales at $1.283 billion.
While other studios would be happy to gross a billion dollars in an entire year, Disney has managed to achieve the feat before the end of February.
Avatar Leads The Way
The major driving factor behind Disney’s box office success is Avatar: The Way of Water which has now grossed an amazing $2.2433 billion worldwide. That number allowed the film to pass Titanic as the third highest grossing film of all time.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania also debuted this weekend to higher than expected results. The film grossed over $120 million last weekend.
Upcoming Blockbusters
While Disney has reached its first billion dollars this year, it certainly won’t be the last. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (May 5), “The Little Mermaid” (May 26), Elemental (June 16), “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (June 30) and “The Marvels” (Nov. 10) are all on the slate for Disney this year.
Disney’s High Bar
While Disney is off to a great start, the box office has yet to completely rebound from the pandemic. In 2019, Disney managed $11.12 billion at the box office, by far the best result by any studio in history.
“Disney was coming off such a historic run of box office years that even without the pandemic or streaming-intense strategies, it would have been a challenge to duplicate” says Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst at BoxOfficePro. “Nevertheless, this is an encouraging start to 2023. It will still take some time, but this may be the beginning of an important turnaround for the biggest studio in the world.”

Whether or not Disney can reach its pre-pandemic highs remains to be seen. Either way however, the studio is off to a great start.
