Avatar: The Way of Water Passes The Titanic, Is Now Third Highest Grossing Film
Avatar: The Way of Water has once again raced past Titanic, and this time it is likely for good. The dueling James Cameron films had been vying for the honor of being the third highest grossing film of all-time.
James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar sequel has now grossed $2.2433 billion globally, which was just enough to pass Titanic which grossed $2.2428 billion.
A Heated Battle
The Way of Water had previously passed the Titanic last weekend, but a Super Bowl weekend re-release of the 1997 blockbuster allowed Titanic to resurface and claim back its #3 spot.
The only two films to gross more than Avatar: The Way of Water are the first Avatar film (2.92 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion). Both are unlikely to be caught by James Cameron’s latest release.
One of the factors helping The Way of Water at the box office is the appeal of seeing the film in premium formats. The Avatar sequel has now crossed the $250 million mark from Imax screens alone.
James Cameron Dominates
While it unlikely that The Way of Water will be able to climb any higher on the all-time grossing list, there is no doubt that James Cameron is the king of the box office.
The blockbuster director has now created three of the four highest grossing films of all time. He will look to repeat his success with the upcoming Avatar sequels. The third installment of the franchise is expected to debut in December 2024.
