Universal Orlando Raises Starting Pay, Promises Better Work Enviorment
Just as Walt Disney World is getting set to begin another round of negotiations with the largest Cast Member union in Florida, neighboring Universal Studios Orlando announced today that they are introducing a new minimum starting rate of $17 an hour.
A Slew of New Benefits
In a note to employees, President & COO Kare Irwin announced, “effective June 4, 2023, we are not only increasing our starting base rate to $17 per hour, but we are increasing many of our starting rates across the business. In addition, many Team Members will receive an increase based on the new rates and their time with the company. ”
Universal Orlando also announced that it would increase its 401K match, and add compensation leave. Furthermore the resort will double parental leave, and change the Team Member comp ticket availability.
An “Elevated Work Environment”
In her letter, Irwin also noted:
“We are also focused on elevating the work environment and have begun upgrading break areas. And back of house restrooms and have exciting plans for Team Member dining that we will share shortly”
Disney Resumes Negotiations
While Universal Orlando Team Members will certainly be glad to hear the news, the decision by Universal may put pressure on Disney.
The company had previously offered a $1 pay raise to $16 an hour. This was done as part of their last round of negotiations with the Service Trades Council Union.
The offer was rejected, and the two sides will join back at the bargaining table tomorrow.
