Avatar: The Way of Water Passes the Titanic, Can It Stay There?
James Cameron is in a heated battle with none other then James Cameron, for who will have the third highest grossing movie of all time.
Cameron’s most recent film- Avatar: The Way of Water is ending its box office run, but managed to gross enough this week to pass the Titanic for the #3 all-time spot.
The Titanic Resurfaces
Interestingly however, Paramount has chosen to re-release the 1997 epic on Super Bowl weekend. Based on early returns, the Titanic could actually top the box office, a quarter century after it was released.
If the Titanic can achieve that feat, it will be the first reissue to top the box office since the original three Star Wars films were re-released in 1997.
Here is where things get interesting. Avatar: The Way of Water managed to top 2.198b at the international box office this week, allowing it to squeak past the Titanic (2.1974b).
However based on the two film’s trajectory’s the Titanic will likely beat out Avatar this weekend. Whether or not it runs up a high enough margin to pass the blockbuster remains to be seen.
James Cameron On Top
No matter the outcome of the friendly competition, the big winner here is clearly James Cameron. The director now holds the distinction of directing three of the top four highest grossing films of all time.
While it is unlikely that The Way of Water will be able to catch Avengers: Endgame for second all time (the film would need to gross another 600m), the second Avatar film has managed to live up to the bar set by its predecessor
