A John Williams Documentary Is In The Works
John Williams is perhaps the most famous composer of the last 50 years. From his longtime work with Steve Spielberg, to his iconic Star Wars themes, Williams’ names has become synonymous and the film and franchises that have dominated pop culture since the 1970s.
Now, fans will finally be able to get as behind the scenes look at the famous composer, as Amblin Television, Imagine Documentarys and Nedland Media are collaborating to bring his story to life through a feature-length documentary.
Although the new documentary will be directed by Laurent Bouzereau, it is Williams’ relationship with Spielberg that is at the heart of the documentary.
A Legendary Friendship
Spielberg and Williams have an amazing 50-year relationship. The collaboration has led to some of the most iconic scores in film history including: Jaws, Schindler’s List, E.T., Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, and event he director’s current film- The Fabelmans.
Although Williams, now 90, had initially intended to retire after finishing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, earlier this month he surprised his longtime friend by stating that was no longer his plan.
A teary eyed Spielberg was quick to remark that he had better plan his next film then.
A Storied Career
John Williams career actually began on television, where he composed music for such diverse shows as the pilot of Gilligan’s Island and NBC’s Meet the Press.
Over his storied career, the composer has received five Academy Awards and an astounding 52 Oscar nominations. This makes Williams the second most nominated person in history- trailing only Walt Disney.
While it would certainly be understandable if Williams wanted to enjoy the fruits of his labor and ease into retirement, that does not seem to be the legendary composer’s plan.
What We Know
While we don’t know the release date or plot of the upcoming documentary, we do know that the film will be produced by Spielberg, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Justin Wilkes, Sara Bernstein and Meredith Kaulfers. With Hollywood heavy hitters like that on board, it sure to be a great film.
I for one can’t wait to get a better look at the life and career of John Williams!
