What Happens To Disney World’s Gingerbread Displays After the Holidays?
Have you ever wondered what happens to Disney World’s Gingerbread displays after the holidays? You may be surprised to find out!
Gingerbread Displays
MickeyBlog kept you posted this year, as the life-sized sweet treats came to life at various Resorts. Disney fans love seeing new designs debut annually!
After the Holidays
When the season comes to a close, Cast Members say goodbye to their beautiful creations. Planning for the upcoming Christmas season begins during summertime.
What Happens?
Disney Parks Blog gives fans the inside scoop on exactly what happens to the impressive structures when Christmas is over. The first step is disassembly.
Edible items are placed in food waste bins and sent for composting. Next, Cast Members deconstruct the wooden frames holding the structures together.
Afterward, they’re taken to Disney’s tree farm. Now for the interesting part; remnants of frosting scattered on the frames are fed to local bees!
After the bees enjoy their fill, wooden structures are cleaned via hot washing, to remove excess sugar. Then, they’re put into storage and reused for the next holiday season.
Disney shared a behind-the-scenes video of the bees at work! Check it out here!
It’s pretty amazing that Cast Members came up with this inventive way to make a difference. The discovery was made about 10 years ago, and the recycling process has been a tradition ever since!
Conservation Manager for Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, Dr. Zak Gezon shares, “Seeing how bees respond to the gingerbread displays is such a spectacular example of the impact an individual can have on the behavior of bees and wildlife.”
“You can even recreate something like this at home in a way that’s beneficial to native pollinators by creating your own pollinator garden using beautiful flowering plants.” Would you ever have guessed that bees are involved in Disney World’s Gingerbread display breakdown process?
