A runDisney event commences tomorrow and continues through January 8. Preparations have begun for Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 2023!
History of the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend
In 1994, Disney welcomed runners to its first Walt Disney World Marathon. Featuring 5,588 participants, it launched the Disney Endurance Series, now known as runDisney.
Here are some interesting facts from the event’s history. Leonid Shvetsov or Russia set the men’s current race record in 1995.
In 1996, race results were produced by electronic timing for the first time. The 2010 races had the largest participant field with 55,000 runners.
It also had the coldest weather, with temperatures in the low 30s! The 20th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon was celebrated in 2013.
95 marathon runners who ran all 20 marathons were recognized. 2013 was also the first year that men were outnumbered by women!
Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 2023
This Weekend includes several races, challenges, and virtual events. Participants will put their skills to the test on a trek through Disney Parks!
2023 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Marathon. A dose of retro 90’s vibes provide a fun theme for the affair.
Today, the event kicked off with the runDisney Health & Fitness Expo at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Tomorrow, January 5, the 5K commences at 5:00 AM ET.
10K participants will race on January 6, also at 5:00 AM. The Half Marathon occurs on January 7, followed by the Marathon on January 8, at the same time.
In addition, Guests can earn extra awards, by competing in all 4 races on pace. Finishers will receive additional medals.
