Avatar: The Way of Water Crosses $1 Billion Mark
Avatar: The Way of Water easily topped the box office again this weekend, brining in another $56 million at the domestic box office and $168 million internationally.
After a subsequently strong Monday showing, James Cameron’s blockbuster is now poised to cross the $1 billion mark on Tuesday.
The sequel to 2009’s smash hit Avatar, The Way of Water will become only the third film to cross the $1 billion this year, after Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion) and Jurassic World Dominion ($1 billion). The film has now surpassed Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness as Disney’s highest grossing film of the year.
Avatar: The Way of Water takes viewers back to the planet Pandora, where Jake Sully and Neytiri are now raising their four kids. In the film, the family must once again protect Pandora from colonization.
The Way of Water has received excellent review from critics. That, combined with strong word of mouth from filmgoers, may be propelling the film to a long run at the box office.
Director James Cameron has previously said that the film would probably have to cross the $2 billion mark in order to make a profit. While it may be tough for the film to reach that mark, it is certainly not out of the question.
