Behind the Scenes of Disneyland’s Space Mountain after Ride Breakdown
Recently, we returned to The Happiest Place on Earth after a three-year absence. While onboard Disneyland’s Space Mountain, it broke down, giving us a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the ride with the lights turned on!
While I personally enjoy getting an inside look at the workings of Disneyland attractions, for some, it may spoil the magic. If that’s you, you may want to skip this article.
Disneyland’s Space Mountain
Located in Tomorrowland, this galactic experience features a thrilling, indoor roller coaster. Opening on May 27, 1977, it was Disneyland’s second coaster.
After the success of Matterhorn Bobsleds, which debuted in 1959, Walt was inspired to build a similar, space-themed ride. Once onboard, Guests are swept into a race through the cosmos!
An epic soundtrack adds an immersive element to the attraction. Combining sci-fi horror and surf music, it creates a sensory ride experience.
Although we’ve witnessed various ride breakdowns at Disneyland over the years, this is the first time we’ve experienced technical difficulties on Space Mountain. Let’s take a look at its interior, without the theatrical additions!
Behind the Scenes
It’s always striking to me, how compact rides look once the lights are turned on. Disney has perfected the art of disguise in the Parks, making the most of seemingly small spaces, causing them to appear more epic than they actually are.
Still, this is a rather large building, compared to some of the other attractions we’ve seen post-breakdown. Notice the ride vehicle below ours on the right; that’s something you never get to see in the dark!
Check out the various levels of track above our roller coaster. Silver metal twists and turns through the black space!
As the ride swiftly moved along the track, it started slowing down, eventually coming to a rather abrupt stop. Suddenly, the room lit up, and Cast Members arrived.
After some time passed, they pushed the vehicle forward, setting it back in motion. We finished our journey with the lights turned on, but luckily, were able to ride again.
It’s always interesting to see the inner workings of a Disney Parks attraction. We hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at Disneyland’s Space Mountain post-ride breakdown!
