This Day in Disney History: December 17
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- December 17.
December 17th featured the debut of a Disney legacy film, the release of a cult classic, and finally, the removal of an iconic logo. Let’s get going!
Ugly Duckling Released (1931)
On this day in 1931, the Silly Symphony cartoon the Ugly Ducking was released.
The short was directed by Wilfred Jackson and loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson fable.
Mickey’s Good Deed Released (1932)
On this day in 1932, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey’s Good Deed was released.
In this short, Mickey decides to sell Pluto to a rich family, in order to raise money for a poor mother’s children on Christmas Eve.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure Opens (1990)
On this day in 1990, the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure opened. Located in the Backlot Annex area of the park, the new playground features equipment and props inspired by the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
The playground would eventually close in 2016.
Fantasia 2000 Debuts (1999)
On this day in 1999, Fantasia 2000 debuted at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Directed by Don Hahn the film is a sequel to the 1940 Disney film Fantasia.
Made up of eight segments set to classical music, the film would eventually be a critical success but struggle at the box office.
Disney-MGM Studios Logo Removed (2007)
Additionally, on this day in 2007, the Disney-MGM Studios logo was removed from the Animation Courtyard archway.
The removal was done in preparation for the park’s January 2008 name change to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
TRON: Legacy Released (2010)
Finally, on this day in 2010, TRON: Legacy was released in the Untied States.
A sequel to the 1982 film Tron, TRON: Legacy features Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn from the original film. Albeit an older version.
The film was a box office and critical success and, like its predecessor, earned a cult following.
