Newborn Baby Abandoned at Animal Kingdom Lodge
Update:
The woman who reported that an abandoned baby was handed to her outside of Animal Kingdom Lodge early Sunday morning turns out to be the mother of the baby. Cassandra Durham, 32, has been transported to a facility for “evaluation and treatment”. Durham is facing a child neglect charge.
Around 2am on Sunday, officials say a newborn baby was abandoned at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Orange County Sheriff’s Office says an unknown woman handed the newborn off to a Guest just outside of the resort early Sunday morning. The Guest walked in the lobby of the resort to report what had happened.
The baby, which appeared to be just hours old, was transported to Celebration Hospital and is said to be in good health.
“A ‘Safe Haven’ law was enacted in Florida to eliminate the tragedies resulting in the abandonment of newborn babies, “ the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “This law allows parents to leave unharmed newborn babies, who are not more than one week old, with an employee at any hospital, emergency medical services station or with a firefighter at any fire station in Florida.”
We will update this story as soon as we know more.
