On the other hand, Avatar: The Way of Water currently sits behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens by 12%, and behind Spider-Man: No Way Home by 23%. Variety reports that although Disney has high hopes for the movie, it may fall short of setting any records on opening weekend.
So far, Cameron’s film is doing best in Korea, with $3.3 million. France, Germany, and Italy follow with $2.9, $2.5, and $1.6 million.
Overseas, #AvatarTheWayOfWater had a solid WED Opening Day grossing 15.8M over just 15 markets (vs #WakandaForever’s 10.7M over 17 markets)
In 2022 that’s just under #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness’s 27.2M over 20 markets.

In China, a huge market for Avatar’s sequel, advanced viewings account for $2.6 million. Hopes are high that Chinese theaters will bring in $100 million on opening weekend.
Unfortunately, due to COVID, several auditoriums have closed, putting expectations on hold. The original Avatar was a hit in the country, racking up $261 million.
Furthermore, the film made almost 70% of its total earnings via the international box office, coming in at $2 billion. Avatar: The Way of Water has the potential to reach $400 to $500 million in global ticket sales by Sunday.
As for North America, Avatar 2 projects $150 to $175 million upon its debut. In order to achieve optimal numbers, it will need to continue to perform well into early 2023, hopefully through the Martin Luther King holiday.
Its predecessor was able to stay strong at the box office, causing ticket sales to climb drastically.
