Let’s start with a look at one of the top stories, regarding its outlook at the box office.
Box Office Break Even
Variety reports that Avatar‘s sequel was so expensive to make, it must become the fourth or fifth highest-grossing movie of all time just to break even! James Cameron has already talked about how pricey the film’s budget is.
Although he won’t give any numbers, early reports state that the production budget, in and of itself, was in the $250 million range. Cameron estimates that based on the budget, “you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history.”

He goes on to confirm, “That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”
Based on the chart of highest-grossing movies worldwide, without inflation adjustments, this means, based on Cameron’s estimates, it’ll have to overtake some major movies! Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War currently sit in the fourth and fifth slots.
Release In China
Avatar: The Way of Water will premiere in China on December 16 along with the U.S. This is big news because it will be the first Disney blockbuster to debut in the country since 2019!
According to The Wall Street Journal, the last 7 Marvel superhero films have still not received release dates. This has highly impacted global box office earnings.
