For the first time in over 95 years, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit returns to Walt Disney Animation Studios and stars in an all-new animated short.
Even cooler? The new short is created by Disney Animation’s hand-drawn animation team and celebrates the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company.
Oswald The Lucky Rabbit
The brand new short, titled Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, is directed by animator Eric Goldberg and produced by Dorothy McKim.
McKim shared, “On the eve of Disney’s 100th anniversary, it was such a joy to create the first new Oswald short from our studio since 1928. Our hand-drawn animation team—including our hand-drawn legends Mark Henn, Randy Haycock, and Eric Goldberg, as well our wonderful team of 2D apprentices—had a ball animating in the style of Oswald’s era.”
Iconic History
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is an iconic part of Disney history and considered Walt’s first breakout animated star. The fun loving rabbit is also one of the first animated characters to feature a unique personality.
Oswald first appeared in 1927 with the short Trolley Troubles and went on to “star” in 26 Oswald short films created by Walt Disney and his team.
The final shorts were created in 1928, the same year Walt lost creative control over Oswald. However, Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, negotiated with with NBCUniversal allowing sportscaster Al Michaels to contract with NBC in exchange for Oswald to return to his rightful home.
Since then, Oswald has made multiple appearances including video games, merchandise, and an animated short, and in the Walt Disney theme parks.
