Walt Disney World Reveals More Details For Affordable Housing Complex
Disney revealed more details about its affordable housing initiative today, including the location and the developer of the new project.
The company previously announced in April that they would setting aside 80 acres of land to construct the new complex, which is expected to include 1,300 units.
At the time, Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World stated:
“The lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across our country, including right here in Central Florida. With this initiative, we’re lending a hand to make a real and meaningful impact in our community by tapping into the best of our company’s strengths. This is the right opportunity and the right time to take action.”
Today’s announcement featured even more details. Here is what the company had to say.
A Prime Location
The location of the new housing development will be west of State Road 429, just miles away from the Magic Kingdom.
The site was chosen do its proximity to schools and shopping, including the Flamingo Crossings Town Center.
A New Partnership
Disney also announced that they had chosen the Michaels Organization to own and operate the property.
In their announcement, the company noted that the Michaels Organization is a “prominent and visionary” developer.
Commenting on the agreement, Michaels CEO John J. O’Donnell said:
“We are excited to work with an iconic brand like Disney to deliver attainable housing for the Central Florida community.
Our goal is to create a repeatable model that we hope will inspire other companies and municipalities to create high quality, attainable housing in their own communities.”
As previously announced the new develop will be privately financed and limited to applicants within a certain income range, including Disney Cast Members.
