VIDEO: 80 Acres of Land Earmarked by Disney World for Affordable Housing
Since 1971, Walt Disney World has played an important role in the Central Florida community and the company is always looking for innovative ways to give back to the community. After all it is where cast members live, work, play and call home!
With that in mind, Disney made the HUGE announcement today that they’ve earmarked nearly 80 acres of their land to provide affordable housing. This is an initiative that has been in the works for a while but things have progressed to the point where Disney can now make these plans public.
Check out the video below:
Disney World President Jeff Vahle had this to say about the collaboration, “The lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across our country, including right here in Central Florida. With this initiative, we’re lending a hand to make a real and meaningful impact in our community by tapping into the best of our company’s strengths. This is the right opportunity and the right time to take action.”
We know that the development will include over 1,300 units and will constructed by a third party affordable housing developer. We can also confirm that the property will be located in southwest Orange County, Florida. It is expected to provide Central Florida residents with a variety of homes that are both affordable and attainable.
The area of the development will be both near schools and close to the newly opened Flamingo Crossings Town Center which will be expanded further in the future to include more retail and dining options. Best of all, the development will ONLY be available for qualifying applicants in Central Florida INCLUDING Walt Disney World cast members!
Disney promises that the new housing initiative will feature the same innovation, expertise and attention to detail that you’d find at the theme parks.
But that’s not all, over on the West Coast, Disneyland is building on the success of Buena Esperanza, a studio apartment community the company funded for veterans and homeless individuals with mental illness. Next up will be Finamore Place which is currently under construction and is expected to be completed this summer. Finamore will provide and addition 100 housing units and Disneyland has committed its continued support to the project.
The Walt Disney Company ahs spent years investing in local nonprofits including through Disney’s VoluntEARS program, contributions to local food banks and more. Recently the company donated $3 million to nonprofits on the frontlines when it comes to helping local communities.
