Disney Cruise Line Confirms Purchase of World’s Largest Cruise Ship
Several weeks ago, I shared that Disney Cruise Line was in the market to purchase the world’s largest cruise ship, the Global Dream. The 9,000 passenger vessel was already under construction and about halfway completed when the cruise line it was being built for, Dream Cruises, went bankrupt and was all but scheduled to be sold for scrap metal. This is until Disney stepped in!
Scott Gustin on Twitter has been following today’s developments surrounding the purchase of the Global Dream and has some more specifics on the deal.
The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members.

It’s not called the World’s Largest Cruise Ship for nothing! Once complete, the ship will comes in at 208,00 gross tons and the capacity will be about 6000 passengers and 2300 crew members. (If you are familiar with Royal Caribbean, this is about the same capacity as the Wonder of the Seas.)

When the ship was originally under construction for Dream Cruises, it was intended to sail in the Asian markets. While we still do not know where this new Disney Cruise Line cruise ship will sail out of and what destinations it will sail to, it might also be the Asian markets.
In a statement released today by Disney Cruise Line, the new ship will be based outside of the United States. The statement goes on to say the, “Acquisition of a partially completed ship that will bring people the magic of a Disney Line vacation to new global destinations.”

Chairman of Disney Parks Experiences, and Products, Josh D’Amaro said, “Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before.”
Disney Cruise Line also stated the new ship will, “Feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart.”
While the ship was originally conceived by Dream Cruise Line, it will definitely be a Disney ship through and through once it departs on its maiden voyage. The ship will be renamed and “Certain features reimagined under the world-renowned expertise of Walt Disney Imagineers.”

In addition to today’s announcement of the purchase of the World’s Largest Cruise Ship, Disney Cruise Line will take delivery of the all-new Disney Treasure in 2024. Then in 2025, it will take delivery of another Triton Class ship. This new cruise ship that was announced today will not be taking the place of any other cruise ships already announced by the company and will make a total of eight ships in the fleet.
