Did Disney Cruise Line Just Purchase a 9,000 Passenger Cruise Ship?
As you can imagine, the COVID-19 pandemic has wrecked havoc on the cruising industry. While things are starting to get back to status quo, it has not come without some bankruptcies in the industry.
And, if the rumors online are true, the bankruptcies of a ship builder and cruise line might mean that Disney Cruise Line is now the owner of the world’s largest cruise ship at 9,000 passengers!
The German news outlet, NDR, is reporting it’s already a done deal that Disney Cruise Line has purchased what was to to be named the Global Dream.
This ship was being built by Genting Hong Kong and would have a part of the Dream Cruises fleet. Both of these companies have folded due to the pandemic.
The Global Dream is nearly built but has not been worked on since January of this year. It was originally ordered by Dream Cruises to sail itineraries in the Asian market.
For months now, it was being reported that the 9,000 passenger cruise ship would never even see one guest and be sold for scrap instead.
It is also being reported that Disney Cruise Line will have the ship moved to the Meyer Weft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany to be completed. Meyer Weft is no stranger to Disney Cruise Line and was also the ship builder for their most recent ship to be completed, the Disney Wish.
The Global Dream had an original price tag on it of $1.56 billion. However, Disney Cruise Line most likely purchased the ship at a bargain price since it was almost sold just for scrap and has been sitting idle for several months without a buyer.
The news of Disney Cruise Line purchasing this 9,000 will probably take many by surprise – including me! Disney has also stated that the preferred to stick to a small ship size for their cruise line and stay away from “super ships” that are common with other cruise lines including Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class Ships. A 9,000 passenger ship will be the largest cruise ship in the world by thousands.
Disney Cruise Line has made it well known that they two ships on the horizon that will soon be added to their fleet. One of those ships is the Disney Treasure that was just introduced at the recent D23 Expo and is expected to take its maiden voyage in 2024.
With the news of this new ship, it makes me curious if Disney Cruise Line will now be introducing three new ships in the future or if the Global Dream will take the place of one of the ships that was already announced.
It is being reported that this new ship that Disney Cruise Line allegedly just purchased will be hitting the high seas as early as 2024 as well.
