This Day in Disney History: November 15
Welcome back to our daily journey through the history of the Disney company! Today we are looking at this day in Disney history- November 15.
November 15th saw the release of a classic Mickey short, two restaurant openings in Walt Disney World and perhaps the biggest announcement in the companies history! Let’s get to it!
Jungle Rhythm Released (1929)
On this day in 1929, the Mickey Mouse short, Jungle Rhythm, was released.
The cartoon was directed by Walt Disney himself and featured the music of Carl W. Stalling.
With Walt also providing the voice of Mickey, the titular mouse heads out on an African Safari, where he has to sing and dance to calm the jungle animals.
The Florida Project is Announced (1965)
On this day in 1965, Walt and Roy Disney announced the official beginning of the Florida Project to the press.
Also on hand for the announcement, was Florida Governor Haydon Burns. The project would eventually develop into the creation of Walt Disney Word!
At the presentation, Walt noted that:
“This concept here will have to be something that is unique so that there is a distinction between Disneyland in California, and whatever Disney does, notice I didn’t say Disneyland in Florida, whatever Disney does in Florida.”
Jim Henson Inducted into the TV Hall of Fame
On this day in 1987 Jim Henson was induced into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
In honor of the occasion, a short segment hosted by Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy featured various Muppets singing a tribute song titled, “Jim Is”.
Other inductees to the Hall of Fame that year also included, Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, and Jacques Cousteau.
The Garden Grill Opens (1993)
On this day in 1993, the Garden Grill Restaurant opened in Epcot.
Replacing the Good Turn restaurant in The Land pavilion, the new eatery features character dining and unique views of the Living with the Land attraction below.
Contempo Cafe Opens (2008)
Finally, on this day in 2008, the Contempo Cafe opened at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
Located on the Grand Canyon Concourse, the new quick service restaurant replaced the Concourse Steak House.
