‘The Lion King’ Celebrates 25 Years on Broadway
Disney has reached an epic milestone regarding one of its most popular plays. The Lion King is celebrating 25 years on Broadway!

Only two other productions have ever achieved this status. On November 13, Disney’s The Lion King joined the ranks.

The show opened in 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Since then, it’s moved to the Minskoff Theater where it recently celebrated with a special, 25th-anniversary performance.
Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice feature songs in the beloved show. The Lion King has brought its tale to audiences on every continent except Antarctica.

It’s come to over 100 cities in 21 countries and has performed in 9 different languages. Currently, there are 9 productions of The Lion King around the world.
In 1998, it won 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Director of a Musical. Julie Taymor was actually the first woman to ever win the illustrious award!

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, D23 shares that the show has been seen by 112 million people! Over the years, several former Lion King Cast Members have taken on staff roles.
The production truly is a family affair! One of the cast’s standout memories is the show’s return after a hiatus due to the pandemic.

A special performance of ‘Circle of Life’ took place in Times Square for Good Morning America on the day it re-opened. It was an amazing moment, to say the least!
