Halloween or Christmas? What Genre is the Nightmare Before Christmas?
Halloween or Christmas? That is the ultimate question. Does Jack Skellington and the amazing characters in Nightmare Before Christmas fall under the Halloween or Christmas movie genre?
Let’s dig in!
Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 film with a cult following and a large fan base! These dedicated fans agree that the movie is pretty amazing. But one thing fans can’t agree on us is where this movie falls under with holiday genres.
Well good news Nightmare fans. Director Henry Selick is putting the argument to rest.
A Holiday Mash-Up?
Selick recently spoke to Comicbook.com to promote his newest collaboration Wendell & Wild, and addressed his thoughts on the movie genre.
Selick shared “At the very beginning, when Tim Burton came up with this original idea in the ’80s at Disney, when it was intended to be a half-hour TV special in stop-motion, at the very beginning, I saw it as a mashup, that it’s both.”
Selick considers this “the perfect collision between those two holidays” and notes that many fans watch it multiple times through the Halloween and Christmas seasons.
Supporting Opinions
Chris Sarandon, who played Jack Skellington, also shared his thoughts.
“I know that there are a lot of fans who come up to me saying, ‘We watch it every Halloween,’ and I have fans that come up and say, ‘We watch it every Christmas,’ I have fans who come up and say, ‘We watch it at both Christmas and Halloween,” Sarandon said.
Sarandon notes that he at the end of the day it is all about the support of the fans!
