The new publications also include an original graphic novel and a reprint of the original 1991 comic book run of the “Darkwing Duck” tales, according to today’s announcement at San Diego ComicCon.
This expansion of the wider Donald Duck Universe builds upon the already-announced streaming series in development for Disney+ involving the cloaked hero.
The original TV series ran from 1991 to 1992 on the beloved Disney Afternoon on ABC. The series follows Drake Mallard who moonlights as Darkwing Duck. The show serves as a parody of the 1930’s hero “The Shadow” and other Golden Age comic book heroes. The series also includes Launchpad McQuack of “DuckTales” fame.

The 1991 comic run brought a retelling of the “Darkly Dawns the Duck” episode of the original animated television show. Then, the run planned to coincide with the launch of a whole new comic series along with “Tailspin.”

Both titles were quickly canceled due to the Disney Comics Implosion in late 1991. Poor sales and high expectations collided resulting in Disney canceling all but three titles in the Disney library. Some of the titles did manage to live on in the Disney Afternoon magazine published by Marvel Comics between 1994 and 1995.

“His classic adventures will be reprinted as well in facsimile editions and graphic novels. The hard-to-find 1991 limited series released by Disney Comics with contributions by John Blair Moore and others will soon be accessible again to fans and collectors of classic Disney comics,” said Dynamite in a recent CBR article refrencing the reprints.
The “Darkwing Duck” comics will be available in early 2023. All signs point to the Disney+ original series sometime after that.
