Minnie Mouse Ears: Where to Get Them, How to Wear Them, and SO Much More
If you’ve never been to Walt Disney World you may not quite understand the fandom that is Minnie Mouse ears.
Mouse ears have been iconic to Disney World, but the Minnie Mouse ear headband has completely created its own craze.
Sure, you will see children running around with these colorful, and sometimes themed, ears, but oftentimes it will be full grown adults! And we’re not even almost embarrassed. In Disney World, it’s almost weird to not have a set of Minnie Mouse ears that coordinates with your outfit!
Types of Ears
There are 3 types of Minnie Mouse ears: authentic, knock off, and homemade. Each type has its pros and cons.
Authentic:
Authentic ears are the ones purchased through Disney parks, or shopDisney and have an iconic Disney tag. These are the highest quality ears available, too. They have a thick, sturdy headband that can support the heavy ears.
Disney releases new ears every month for holidays, to celebrate hotels and attractions, movies, and just because it’s a hot color. Most ears can be purchased in parks for $29.99.
PROS:
- Collectible
- Hold value! (There are Facebook selling groups just for them)
- Very very durable
CONS:
- Most expensive option
- Heavy
- Can’t customize
Knock Off:
Don’t mistake this term for bad, they’re not bad because they have their perks. Knock off ears can be found at Walmart for $4.98 each or at Sam’s Club in a coordinating pack of 5 for $24.98.
PROS:
- Very affordable
- Lightweight
- Easy to wear
CONS:
- Only a couple options to choose from
- Break easily
- Proportions always seem a little “off”
Homemade
If you are crafty and ready to brave a new adventure, take a stroll through Pinterest for some new ear ideas! If you are brave enough to take it on, the world is your oyster!
You can make ears from your favorite movies or characters, an area of ear design that Disney is truly lacking in, unless you’re looking for The Little Mermaid.
PROS:
- You can be as creative or detailed as you want
- Create any character-inspired design
- Have exactly what you want
CONS:
- Messy to make
- After buying all the craft supplies, it’s actually more expensive
- Even more expensive when you give up and just go to Etsy
Tips for Wearing Ears Comfortably
These beautiful accessories do have a drawback. No matter what kind you get, they all have a way of pinching that delicate spot behind your ears, causing a headache. No fun. There are things you can do to help!
Stretch Your Ears
This can be a little scary because you just got these beauties, you don’t want to break them! If you have purchased authentic ears, these suckers are strong. Here’s what you do – open 2 dresser drawers and put one side of your Minnie ears in 1 drawer and the other side in the other drawer.
This is going to look strange. Leave them here overnight. This will not overstretch, but instead, it will give you a little stretch and you will find them so much more comfortable!
Check the Inside
When buying homemade ears, make sure that if you use sequin fabric that it isn’t touching the back of your ears or head. It will tangle in your hair and scratch, Ouch! Once again, authentic ears, even the super sparkly ones, don’t have a problem here because they are lined with velvet.
Storing Your Ears
Be proud and display them! We have definitely fallen down the rabbit hole on Pinterest looking at all of the artful ways to display Minnie Mouse ears. Our favorite is the gallery wall where every pair is outlined in a picture frame.
If you search on Etsy, you can even find special ear holders made just for these ears! You can even find little cute ones with a Mickey on the front. It’s amazing the options that fans have come up with for solutions for hanging on the walls or storing on shelves.
We’re thinking of this wooden shelf holder for the office!
The most important thing about Minnie Ears in Disney World is to let go and have fun. Being an adult means that you have to take everything so seriously.
Well, I for one miss the days of piggy tails and hair bows and I’m happy to get a piece of that back!
