More Disney+ Percy Jackson Casting News Revealed
We’ve got some exciting casting news regarding the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series coming to Disney+. We can confirm that Leah Jeffries will be taking on the role of Annabeth Chase.
Jeffries previously had roles in Empire and Faith Under Fire.
In addition to Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri was also cast in the series. Both actors will star alongside Walker Scobell who will be playing Percy Jackson in the project produced by 20th Television. Simhadri will play Grover who along with Annabeth (played by Jeffries) are Percy’s best friends. We can also report that filming is starting soon in Vancouver.
Author of the Percy Jackson books Rick Riordan recently felt the need to speak out on his homepage amidst controversy surrounding Jeffries being cast in the role of Annabeth who is described as white in the books. Riordan said, “The core message of Percy Jackson has always been that difference is strength,” he wrote. “There is power in plurality. The things that distinguish us from one another are often our marks of individual greatness. You should never judge someone by how well they fit your preconceived notions.”
As DEADLINE tells us, in the book series Annabeth is the true daughter of the Greek goddess Athena. Annabeth is described as a brilliant strategist with a curious mind. She spent five years at Camp Half-Blood and is now looking forward to trying out what she’s learned in the human world. Annabeth has a reciprocal relationship with Percy. She teaches him how to survive in the mythological world whereas he teaches her to connect with her humanity.
We also know that Riordan along with Jon Steinberg will be writing the pilot for the show. James Bobin is set to direct. Executive producers for the project include Bobin, Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Anders Engström, Jet Wilkinson and The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg.
