Disney’s Inside Out Focuses on Emotional Growth
Disney’s Inside Out follows Riley, an 11-year-old girl through important moments and changes in her pre-teen years. She and her family had to move to a new city during the film, landing Riley in a new school.
Emotions in Headquarters
Riley’s core emotions (Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness, and Disgust) tell her story in the headquarters of Riley’s brain. Here, we also see glimpses of Riley’s past through her memories.
Her memories manifest as different colored spheres, colored based on the emotion tethered to the event. Also, the memories’ colors (a.k.a. Riley’s feelings) can change based on how Riley remembers them. Psychologist Jennifer Talarico praised Disney’s Inside Out for its accurate emotional portrayals.
Memories and Emotions
Talarico especially noted the significance of “how remembering past events can regulate emotion.” She continued by saying the film accurately portrays how “memories allow us to mentally time travel to relive the past in the present…it’s well-established that the emotional character of events is sometimes altered as we recall them.”
As Riley spins into a state of depression, her memories become increasingly negative over time. However, Talarico says that (for the most part) memories become more positive as we age; therefore, it is a “normal, healthy aspect of remembering.”
A Healthy Riley
All ends fine for young Riley. Finally, Disney’s Inside Out ends with Joy realizing that Sadness is essential to emotional growth and complexity.
