Disney Archives Shows Off Stunning Costumes For Oscar Contender ‘Nightmare Alley’
As we inch ever closer to this weekend’s Academy Awards, we all have our favorites! The film I’m rooting for in this year’s Best Picture category is definitely Nightmare Alley by one of my favorite directors Guillermo del Toro. Compared to the other nominees, this film has remained slightly under the radar but trust me when I say that it’s absolutely stunning! Need proof? Just wait until you see the costumes!
Since Nightmare Alley is nominated for Best Costume Design, Walt Disney Archives has a very special treat for us, a closer look at some of the incredible costumes which, as you’ll see, really help to tell the story!
For those unfamiliar, the film takes viewers into the underworld of a traveling carnival where a mentalist works up a scheme to exploit rich Manhattan socialites. The film has earned an impressive four Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Costume Design.
The stunning designs that you see really evoke the film noir quality that del Toro was going for with this project. The costume designer Luis Sequeira had the not-so-easy task of outfitting a rather deceptive cast of characters.
In an interview last year with Vogue magazine, Sequeira said that when it came to the costumes, Nightmare Alley almost represents two different films. You have both high-society New York and the seedy sideshow/carnival life.
“Luis designed a reality with his costumes that reflect personality and help tell the story,” Del Toro says. “Leather, wool, embroidery—they all define character and integrate visually to a color and texture palette, seamlessly.”
Don’t miss Nightmare Alley, currently streaming on Hulu. It stars Bradley Cooper, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman and Toni Collette. We’ll entice you with a trailer below:
Please note: Nightmare Alley is rated R and is not suitable for viewers under the age of 17 without parental guidance.
