VIDEO: The Dapper Dans Salute Service Members During Flag Retreat at Disneyland
Over President’s Day weekend, Disneyland debuted a reimagined Flag Retreat Ceremony as the stories of countless U.S. Armed Forces service members came to life.
As you’ll be able to see from the video below, for the first time, the lyrics to each service branch’s anthem were sung by the one and only Dapper Dans along with active-duty service members and veterans! As service men and women surround the flagpole songs including “The Cassions Go Rolling Along,” “Anchors Away,” “The Marines’ Hymn,” “Semper Paratus” and “The U.S. Air Force Song” helped convey the courage, service and sacrifices made by members of the armed services. The event also included patriotic quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr. and former US Presidents. A recording of the moon landing was even played!

Did you know that the daily Flag Retreat Ceremony is a tradition that dates all the way back to Disneyland’s opening day in 1955. During the coronavirus shut-down, security cast members even helped raise and lower the American flag each day for the 13 months the park was closed to the public.
Similar to what you saw in the video above, the Disneyland Band and Dapper Dans regularly contribute musical performances to this important ceremony.
The video above captures a momentous occasion because it was the first time that the Dapper Dans have rejoined the Flag Retreat Ceremony since the park’s closure back in 2020.
Supporting veteran and active-duty service members is a tradition with origins that date all the way back to founders Walt Disney and Roy Disney. Both supported the nation in World War I. Roy was in the Navy and Walt was in the American Red Cross. Through Disney’s Heroes Work Here initiative, Disney has hired more than 11,000 veterans and their spouses since 2021. In addition the Disney Veterans Institute has helped hundreds of companies across the country set up veteran hiring programs.
