21 Years of Disney California Adventure
Let’s celebrate 21 years of Disney California Adventure!
Disney California Adventure Park opened on February 8, 2001 as part of the largest expansion in Disneyland history at the time.
The 72-acre park opened in 2001 as a tribute to the history, culture and creativity of California.
Construction of the park began in January of 1998 and was completed in early 2001.
21 years of Disney California Adventure
California Adventure has seen many changes over the last 21 years. Guests were critical of DCA initially, mainly because there weren’t enough activities for kids and no nighttime shows to enjoy.
Disney responded to criticism by adding shows like Disney’s Electrical Parade and adding attractions for children.
In May 2004 The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror opened.
A major expansion and redesign was announced in late 2007. Over the next five years new attractions and shows were opened, including Toy Story Midway Mania!, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Buena Vista Street and Cars Land.
The expansion paid off in increased attendance which held steady until March of 2020.
Pandemic closure
In March 2020, DCA was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It didn’t reopen until April 30, 2021.
However, guests got to enjoy “A Touch of Disney” in mid-March of 2021, at Disney California Adventure.
More additions in 2021 and 2022
Later in 2021, Avengers Campus opened to huge crowds and positive reviews.
Jessie’s Whirl, a carousel featuring Jessie the Cowgirl from Toy Story opened in early 2022.
Mulan’s Lunar New Year Procession also debuted in 2021. This beautiful parade is bright and festive – honoring family, friendship and good wishes. This is only running for a limited time – from January 21 to February 13, 2022.
Grand Californian
February 8 is also the anniversary of the opening of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa! This gorgeous hotel features Craftsman-style elegance and of course Disney’s impeccable service!
As an added bonus, you can enter Disney California Adventure from the Grand Californian!
So after you enjoy a breakfast with princesses, relax by the pool, spend some quality at the spa, you can continue the Californian immersion at California Adventure!
