Neon Lights Flicker Inside Upcoming Connections Cafe
The neon lights of Broadway may find themselves wittly celebrated in song. Last night though, the neon lights of EPCOT caught the attention of Nick over at MagicalNewsLive. Lucky for us, he caught the retro excitement in three different videos that he shared.
Disney veterans will recognize the colorful menagerie from Colortopia by Glidden. The exhibit featured inside the space formerly known as Innoventions East.
Last year, the building also served as a temporary location for MouseGear, the former EPCOT flagship merchandise store. In September, the innovative theme park opened its new, modern-themed retail location, Creations Shop. The location sits just across a breezeway from the incredible new store.
The former Innoventions East building continues its epic transformation to align with the clean lines and refreshing feel of Creations Shop. When complete, the space will serve as home to the brand-new Connections Cafe and Eatery. Previously, another popular quick-service restaurant, the Electric Umbrella, called the space home.
A Bit of Neon History
If you are new to all things Disney, Innoventions East (and West) long offered guests opportunities to explore a world of scientitific and technological discoveries. In the true spirit of the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT), Innoventions held on to the park’s core goals as set forth by Walt Disney himself.
“EPCOT will take its cue from the new ideas and new technologies that are now emerging from the creative center of American industries. It will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed but will always be introducing, and testing, and demonstrating new materials and new systems,” Disney said in his 1966 video introducing the concept.

A few years ago, the Colortopia presented by Glidden space did just that. Opening in 2015, the exhibit offered guests three different ways to explore the power of color. The interactive color lab delighted younger guests. For older guests, “The Power of Color Theatre” unofficially played off of concepts introduced by Pixar’s “Inside Out,” regarding the psychology of hues.

“My favorite experience is in the third zone, “Color Our World,” which features color shadows and a magic paintbrush. With the magic paintbrush, I was able to choose the color palette I wanted to create a spectacular scene on digital screen. Depending on the color, the scene and storyline changed,” said cast member Geoffrey Pointon in a archived Disney Parks Blog article.
With so much in the works for the worlds of EPCOT, it will be interesting to see what is in store for these long-dark lights at Connections Cafe and Eatery construction moves along.
