Estimates Are That Disney Lost Over $600 Million In ‘Black Widow’ Pirating
If you remember back to last Summer, Marvel and Disney made the decision to release Black Widow at cinemas and on Disney+ simultaneously. This ultimately got them sued by the star of the film Scarlett Johansson and apparently, according to a recent piece in ComicBook.com, also resulted in about $600 million in losses due to online piracy.
According to a recent investigation by DEADLINE, Black Widow was pirated by an estimated 20 million viewers resulting in the estimated loss.
It should also be noted, that when Disney+ releases a film for Premier Access, this comes at an additional cost as sites like Google Play, Amazon Firestick etc. will take an estimated 15% from each Premier Access purchase.
Since part of Johansson’s earnings for the film were dependent on the films performance at the global box office and since there was no provision for Premier Access sales, Johansson made the decision to sue Disney. The lawsuit was settled out of court with insiders suggesting that Johansson was given another $40 million for the project.
Bygones seem to be bygones at the moment as Johansson is reportedly acting in an upcoming Marvel project. In a recent statement the actor said, “I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”
However, it’s not all bad news, as ComicBook.com tells us, Black Widow did contribute to Marvel’s success at the box office where it is estimated that MCU films accounted for 30% of the total haul in 2021. That’s not bad!
